Hindi ShabdSagar was published by Nagri Pracharini Sabha Kashi between 1922– 1929 in 4 volumes. It had 93000 words. It was a humongous effort made possible by donations from various Rajas.
An expanded version was published between 1965 to 1975 in 11 volumes.
Today there are said to be around 1.5 lakh words and including technical words in all branches of studies around 6.5 lakh words. However there is no central continuous effort or funding by anyone to revise and publish dictionary yearly like Oxford English dictionary.

The Father of Modern Hindi Language is Bharatendu Harishchandra. There's no doubt that Hindi as a language has a great legacy, and many writers and poets have made indispensable contributions to the language. Bharatendu Harishchandra wrote under the pen name 'Rasa' which became popular due to his works.

As much as the idea seems reasonable on the face of it, there are several issues with it. The main one is, the misconception that multi-ethnic countries need a common language to bring them together. You name lots of examples of languages spoken by other countries but you fail to understand how English still plays a role in those countries. Given that India is a federal democracy and not an autocracy, the central government can and should never impose a common language.
We don't need to have a common language to unite us. We're united in our diversity. We don't need to be the same religion, the same culture, the same language to be a united country. This kind of thinking in fact keeps us apart. When we cannot respect each other for each others uniqueness at an individual level or at a community level it creates the kind of racial tensions we see today in India.
